Most vacationers begin their holiday in Honolulu the capital city of Hawaii, which is on the island of Oahu. This is a Hawaii's most populous city and is a fantastic introduction to the delights of the Hawaiian islands. If you are looking for a slightly quieter alternative to uber popular Waikiki then take a visit to Hanauma beach park. In this beautifully sheltered bay you can hire a canoe, take surfing lessons or just relax on the golden sands. If you tire of fun in the sun, then it may be time for some shopping. If you are interested in the history of Hawaii then you will want to spend some time visiting museums and palaces Honolulu. At the Bishops Museum you can discover how Polynesian explorers landed on the island hundreds of years before Captain Cook arrived in 1778. You can also visit Pearl Harbor where you can pay your respects to the memorial dedicated to the Pacific Fleet, which was attacked by the Japanese in 1941. Kids and adults alike will love Kapi'olani park which is home to Honolulu's historic zoo, here you can view majestic gigantic birds up close. Hawaii is also one of the best locations on the planet to see humpback whales. Thanks to the fantastic weather of Hawaii, the humpback whales are drawn into the warm shallow waters around the main islands. These large whales are incredibly graceful and you can listen to the haunting melodies of the whale song from miles away. The best time to see the humpback whales is from December through to May as the whales follow their annual migratory patterns. While the humpback whales can be viewed on all the way islands the best place to see them as in the shallow Auau channel which is located between Lanai, Molokai and West Maui. Food lovers will really delight in Hawaii's local cuisine. Thanks to the large Asian American population on the island, you can enjoy delicious Japanese fusion dishes. Also, make sure to set aside time to catch an authentic Luau. Here you can experience traditional Hawaiian culture and witness the beautiful hula dance. This uniquely Hawaiian dance is accompanied by songs which tell the stories and traditions of Hawaii. You may even want to learn the dance yourself from a kumu hula or hulu teacher.
