Pageant jettisons swimwear round
The present Miss England, Lance Corporal Katrina Hodge, and finalists in the Miss London competition have posed in sportswear this year, instead of the stereotypical swimwear. The 25 finalists of the Miss London competition, scheduled to be held on May 25, will model sportswear rather than swimwear, at Miss Hodge's request. Sportswear for the contestants will be provided by the Kings Road Sporting Club and evening wear will be designed by Karen Karmody. According to Miss Hodge, who has taken a break from her Army career for her year as Miss England, removing the bikini round from the beauty contest would prove the competition is about "real women". The present Miss England, who served in the Adjutant Generals Corps, said: "It's not just Miss London, it's going to be Miss England as well that's not going to have the bikini round. "The reason is, in a world of size zero models it's not a particularly good image to give out to girls that you've got to be stick thin. Miss Hodge, who has participated in Miss England competition for two consecutive years, said: "We want to promote that Miss England is more of a real woman, a realistic role model."
