Families go wild on wonderful holidays
Families are becoming more adventurous with their holidays – and one of the biggest growth areas is trekking holidays (just so long as there is wildlife, beaches and other family-friendly attraction to keep the kids entertained, too). Thanks to cheaper travel and more adventurous parents, families are exploring increasingly remote corners of the world. Here are a few family-friendly options: Costa Rica: A popular destination for families, the region appeals to all generations and has a host of attractions for budding nature-lovers and adventurers. Kids will enjoy activities such as a walk along the crater of a volcano, riding zipline cables through the trees, taking a night safari and viewing wildlife including monkeys, scarlet macaws and iguanas. Italian Dolomites: Low-level walking in the Dolomites is a top tip for a happy family holiday. Plus there’s plenty of other activities to keep the kids entertained on days when you’re not walking. Morocco: Low-cost flights, with flight times that most children can cope with, means the colourful and culturally diverse north African country of Morocco is high on the list of hot destinations for families. Check out companies that offer Atlas to the Atlantic tours. Promise the children snake charmers and acrobats in Marrakech; camel riding; plus mules to carry their gear while they amble along, and they’ll believe walking holidays are cool. For a really wild holiday, travel with responsible travel and camp out among the dunes and live like nomads on a Moroccan family trek. Nepal: Children as young as eight will love the experience in the foothills of the highest mountain range on earth in the Annapurna region as they pass through villages and forests on a trek that could be combined with an elephant jungle safari at Chitwan National Park. Peru: Machu Picchu is on so many travellers’ top 10 lists. So what are you waiting for? The kids will love the Inca culture, not to mention the Llamas. Everybody gets a guided tour to suit their age or interest level. How about the adults take a stroll in the orchid garden while the kids learn the Andean flute? Vietnam: From Jungle to Beach is the enticing name of a trip offered by Walks Worldwide. YOu could experience a wildlife safari, gentle trekking to the hills, mountains, lakes and rivers of the Central Highlands and time spent with the colourful local hill tribe people. Where will you be heading for a holiday on the wilder side?
